Q3 Estimated Taxes: What Contractors Need to Know Before September 15

09/02/2026
Straight answers to the questions we get asked most this time of year

When are Q3 estimated taxes due?
Q3 estimated payments are due September 15. If you’re self-employed or run a contracting business, this is one of four payments the IRS expects throughout the year, not just at tax time in April.

Do contractors actually have to pay quarterly?
If you expect to owe more than $1,000 in tax for the year and nobody’s withholding for you, yes. Most trades and contractor businesses fall into this category once work picks up and income gets steady.

What happens if I miss the deadline?
The IRS charges an underpayment penalty, and it grows the longer the balance sits unpaid. It’s a smaller hit if you catch it now than if it rolls into a surprise on your April tax bill.
